How to stay cool in Bangkok this summer

Just because the summer heat is unbearable does not mean that you can’t get out.

There is no doubt that the temperature has cranked up in the last couple of weeks. The onset of summer is firmly here and we are all bracing ourselves to be hit with a wall of heat in the coming month. It often feels that the heat rarely changes in Bangkok. It might drop a few degrees at night, but sometimes its barely noticeable. During this time it is important to take measures to keep yourself cool at home, but if you are looking to venture out, consider some of these options. 

1. Check out what is on at the cinema.

A trip to the cinema in Bangkok is a sure fire way to cool down. The air conditioning likens that to arctic temperatures meaning that you might need to take a jumper with you to keep yourself from freezing. Every one of Bangkok’s shopping malls has a cinema complex showing the latest blockbusters. There are also a few independent ones including Scala, Lido and the Bangkok Screening Room. And don’t forget to stand up for the national anthem that is played before each film.

2. Take a dip.

The beauty of life in Thailand is that you are never too far from a swimming pool. Most condominiums in Bangkok will have their own private pool making it super easy to cool down. Alternatively many of the hotels charge a small fee if you wish to use their facilities and want to lap up getting served food and drinks to your lounger.

3. Shop ’til you drop.

Unlike Bangkok’s markets, the shopping malls are notorious for being cold. At the weekend they fill up as people want to spend their hard earned cash and to escape the heat. Whether you fancy some window shopping or a bite to eat in one of the main restaurants, the shopping malls are one place to really cool down.

4. Hit the river.

The Chao Phraya is one of Bangkok’s most treasured icons. Life on the river is fascinating and is best explored either hopping from the public boats to the khlong boats or on a private tour. Board a boat and zip along the ‘river of kings’ to enjoy the cool water breeze. 

5. Have a massage.

Having a Thai massage is a weekly ritual for most residents. Combing acupressure and yoga poses, the masseuse will leave you feeling invigorated. Bangkok is littered with massage place providing the ideal hideaway from the heat. And if you have been on your feet for too long, then opt for a relaxing foot massage instead.
