5 ways to keep your home cool

Make sure your home is nice and cool this summer with these top tips.

Did you know that Bangkok is the hottest city in the world? It has reached this accolade due to its fairly consistent temperatures year round, which only shift a few degrees throughout the day. It may not reach the blistering heats found in the midday height of desert countries, but its the capital’s average temperatures that give Bangkok this title.

As summer is creeping upon us, the city is starting to heat up. So keep yourself cool at home with these top tips, which should also help reduce your electricity consumption too.

1. Opt for a fan.

A fan may seem outdated with the advent of air conditioning, but this is one way to circulate the air without feeling like you are in a fridge. Freestanding ones makes it easy for you to move them around your home whilst ceiling ones work wonders. It also uses a fraction of the energy to run as opposed to the AC.

2. Efficiently use the air conditioning.

If you are set on using your air conditioning, then make sure that you use it as efficiently as possible. Get it cleaned and maintained regularly for optimal performance. When it is in use make sure all the windows and doors are closed. Remember to set the temperature to around 25 degrees Celsius. Experiment with different temperatures. Set it at 21 degrees you may find that your room gets too cold and you are constantly turning it off and on again. This will put further strain on the unit than a steady temperature.

3. Protect your home from the sun.

North facing properties tend to be the most popular. They avoid the heat of the sun throughout the day, and sometimes experience a gentle breeze. If you are south or west facing, it is an idea to try and block the sun from coming in as it can quickly increase the temperature of your home. Tinted windows will stop the sun’s UV rays from pouring in without distorting your view out. If changing the windows is not an option, then consider applying a film that has the same qualities instead. Alternatively, fit curtains and blinds that absorb the sun and remember to shut them when you are not in that room.

4. Take advantage of natural cool air.

Should you be fortunate enough to experience a breeze in the afternoon or a cooler evening temperature, then open your windows and doors up to take advantage of this. The hot air will soon escape. And if you have a window in your bathroom remember to leave this open to let the hot air leave after a shower.

5. Keep appliances switched off.

Anything that is electrical will generate heat. Therefore when they are not in use, turn off your laptop and television. You may find it more comfortable to use your oven earlier or later in the day, as this is one way to keep you and your kitchen cool. Set the temperature on your fridge and freezer to medium too. Any lower, and it will over exert itself trying to maintain a temperature much lower than you may require.
