Govt. to pay for Blue Line

The Thai government will take back the entire budget for the development of the scheduled Blue Line mass-transit line.

Government Spokesperson Major General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the cabinet has resolved to cancel the 2010 resolution that allowed the private sector to invest in the expanded route for the Hua Lamphong – Bang Khae and Bang Sue – Thaphra sections.

The spokesperson stated the previous resolution focused on auctions that would allow the private sector to invest in the project, thereby pushing up the construction prices. The cabinet has resolved to enforce the 2013 Private Investment in State Undertakings Act (PPP Act) instead, which is in accordance with the government’s policy to focus on the benefits to the people while managing the budget efficiently.

A number of property developments have already been scheduled close to the yet-to-open line.
