8 ways to use the space under your stairs

Add value to your home by making the most of the space under your stairs.

Whether you live in a house or a duplex condominium, you could be wanting to make the most of the space beneath your stairs. This by no means needs to be dead space. Depending on your requirements and permitted space, you could turn it into one of these following additions:

1. Home office.

Bring the office home by fitting a table, shelves and electrical points for your technology, under the space under the stairs. If are aren’t known to have the tidiest of desks, it is probably best to fit doors to keep your working life hidden from the rest of the world.

2. Guest toilet.

If space is not an issue and you have access to plumbing, you might be lucky to be able to squeeze a guest toilet in. Make sure this option is feasible though as you will need a decent head height for it to be a usable space. Go one step further and paint the door one of this year’s colour trends and make it a feature too.

3. Library.

If you prefer to opt for reading the real deal rather than online, you may have an escalating book collection with nowhere to store them. The space under your stairs is ideal for book worms to store their current or past reading list. Fit shelves from top to bottom, and then simply add books.

4. Extra storage.

Short on space to store your golf clubs, suitcases or cleaning equipment? No problem. Enclose the space under your stairs with a door to make this a usable space and to help out with some decluttering.

5. Home entertainment centre.

If your stairs lead up from your living room then why not use the space under the stairs to build a home for your television and home entertainment system. This will give you more space in the living room for an even bigger sofa to kick back on.

6. Utility room.

Should you have limited space for your laundry the space under your stairs is the ideal solution for your washing machine and dryer. It also keeps dirty washing out of sight too.

7. Wine cellar or pantry.

If you are a wine connoisseur or a foodie, and the space under your stairs is located close to your kitchen, why not make this a wine cellar or somewhere to store your stash of food. Some spaces under the stairs do not have any natural light meaning that they are nice and cool, ideal for this kind of storage.

8. Play area.

If you are lacking a space dedicated to your children and you are fed up with their toys being strewn all over your home, you may be able to create a mini play room under your stairs depending on the space. The head height won’t be an issue for smaller people and you could even make a cosy reading nook with cushions and a bookshelf. Alternatively make it into a play kitchen.
