6 ways to upgrade your kitchen

Keep on top of changing fashions with these quick and easy kitchen updates.

Is your kitchen looking a bit tired and past its sell by date? Trends and tastes change but if you aren’t quite ready to invest in whole new kitchen or change the layout, then follow our tips on how to completely transform your kitchen quickly and on a budget.

1. Replace handles.

Changing the handles on your unit is a small change but has a big impact. Styles date quickly so opt for brushed or matt metals rather than wood, minimalist designs or anything slick to create a more modern feel.

2. Upgrade the tap.

Splash out on an expensive looking tap, maybe one with a hose feature to really create a luxe feel in your kitchen. Go one step further and choose one in a copper or another matt metal provided that it fits with the rest of your fixtures and fittings.

3. New splashback.

Invest in some new tiles for your splashback. Brick style is popular, pick white and opt for a dark grey grout for a really contemporary style. Alternatively consider a glass splashback in a block colour rather than tiles to really bring your kitchen into 2016.

4. Paint.

It might sound simple but a fresh coat of paint goes a long way. Whether you upgrade the magnolia walls to a light grey, or paint your dark brown cabinets an off grey tone, all of these will make a real difference fast.

5. Switch worktops.

Like kitchen units, worktops can date quickly. Wooden finishes were in fashion a few years ago but now marble looking, light worktops are on trend. There is a huge range of options available on the market from laminates that are more affordable to granites and composite stones, and even glass and stainless steel. Each have different qualities so to make sure you pick one to suit your lifestyle.

6. New lighting.

Replacing the lighting does not only have an aesthetic impact, but it also creates a new feel. If your kitchen lacks natural light consider spotlights in the ceiling with white fittings so that they blend into the ceiling. Or if you have a dining area in your kitchen fit a stylish centre piece light to hang over the table. Warm white light bulbs are more calming but if you are a keen cook then maybe a cool white for a brighter look is for you.

Follow these simple steps and a complete kitchen overhaul could be off the cards. However, remember that if you are planning to make changes later down the line that any short term changes need to fit with your long term plan.
