There are too many hotels in Bangkok to count. Popping up in every corner of the city to keep up with the growing tourist numbers. From budget hostels offering a bed in a dorm room to five-star luxury offering the best of the best. It can be hard to know where to start but if you are looking for something a bit different, then why not consider one of these alternative Bangkok hotels?

1. Playhaus.

Situated in the throbbing nightlife of Thong Lo is this theatre themed hotel. Each room has a different decor to inspired by well known productions such as Mary Poppins, Aladdin and Romeo and Juliet. The bar is a popular drinking spot and is filled with decadence with mirrors framed by spotlights just like backstage at the theatre. 2. Shanghai Mansions. 

Slam in the middle of Chinatown is this boutique hotel. With the tagline, ‘Romantic, opulent, seductive – 1930s Shanghai comes to life in Bangkok’s historic Chinatown’, this is the place to feel like you have stepped back into China’s yesteryear. The bar on the ground floor is a great place to spend an evening. 3. Atlanta.

Travel right to the bottom of Sukhumvit Soi 2 and you will be greeted by Atlanta. Despite it being located on the edge of one of the seedier parts of town, this hotel proclaims that it has, ‘Zero tolerance of trouble-makers, all illegal activities including possession or use of illicit drugs. Families are welcome only if children are kept under control’. This may not be the swankiest of Bangkok’s hotel offerings but it certainly up there as one of the most unique. 4. Ariyasom Villa.

On the other side of Sukhumvit Road and tucked away at the bottom of Soi 1 is this beautiful hotel with a rich heritage feel. Despite being less than ten years old, the theme here is based around Bangkok from the 1940s and 1950s. The look is perfected with antique furniture and even recycled teak floors. Although aimed to look old in appearance the hotel is brimming with modern amenities with a pool and spa. The restaurant serves mouthwatering vegetarian food that can be enjoyed in this truly tranquil setting.

5. Loy La Long Hotel.

If you didn’t know about Loy La Long Hotel, you certainly would not stumble across it. Situated on the Chao Phraya this small hotel has a genuinely warm feel about it. Park yourself in this two-storey teak house and aside from the longtail boats whizzing past you will quickly forget that you are in the capital. With just seven rooms all lovingly decked out, this the place to switch off and watch the world go by. The open feel of the communal areas also offer a great place to kick back and relax whilst enjoying the freshly prepared food.
