Thailand has a very diverse assortment of property types, from traditional Thai-style wooden houses elevated on stilts to brand new condos in western style high-rise buildings. Unless you’re moving into a luxurious and fully furnished condo unit, you’re most likely going to want to do something that makes your space feel more like home. Here are some tips and tricks to make a big impact with little effort.
Consider Feng Shui First
The placement of decorative items and furniture can really make or break the aesthetics of your home space. It’s easy to buy a painting to dress up a room, but if you place it on a wall that you can only see when you’re lying in your bed it’ll only do you so much good. There are many elements to creating a good Feng Shui house, but a good start would be to enter your home through the front door, stop and look around. What part of the room catches your eye first? Whether it’s a wall, a table or a window, spend time making those places look nice before you decorate anywhere else.
Pick Up Some Plants
Bringing a plant into your home is a simple way to (literally) bring life to a room while also serving as a significant decorative element. If a corner is empty, choose a large and leafy floor plant or even a tree to fill it. If you are low on space or light, choose a small potted plant like a bamboo to bring indoors. Just make sure it is in a spot that can be seen from all corners of the room and won’t be competing for visual attention with any other small item.
Add (Big) Details
Adding detail to a room doesn’t always have to mean buying a new vase or stack of antique books to put in your bookcase. Painting one accent wall can make a huge difference in the room, especially if it is strategically placed. You could go with something bright and bold, like red to match your throw pillows or golden-yellow for the wall opposite your sunset-view window. A soft or subtle color can also make a big difference. With all white walls, consider painting one a pale green or purple. The subtlety may not look like a big change at first, but the new feeling of relaxation it will give when you walk in the room will be worth the effort.
Don’t Forget the Floor
Like the accent wall, the floor is a big opportunity to enhance the overall feeling you get when you walk into a room. It effects the way the room feels physically (especially if you are barefoot) as well as mentally. Think about what you want to get out of decorating your room. If you want the room to be more comfortable, go with a thick area rug in a simple pattern. If you want the room to have more energy, pick something more graphic or colorful that’s an easier texture to walk over. Updating the built in floor can add freshness, such as polishing the wood floor or replacing tiles with something totally different.
