How to keep your home mosquito free

Don’t get bitten this rainy season with these mosquito deterrents for your home. 

Continuing on the theme of the rainy season, not only may you need to seek alternative activities to participate in and ensure that your home is protected from the rain, but this is also the time to ward against mosquitoes who come out to play. Carriers of diseases such as the Zika virus and dengue fever it is important to protect your home against this pests. If your home is resident to mosquitoes then keep them at bay with some of these options. 

1. Screens.

A cool breeze often follows after the rain has fallen. Therefore this is the time to open up your home and make the most of the fresher air. However mosquitoes will be grateful for the opened windows and doors so fit mosquito screens so that you can keep them out and the fresher air in.

2. Traps.

Mosquito traps work by attracting mosquitoes to their light and then trapping them. There are various forms on the market that run off the mains, are portable or are suitable for children. Most department stores stock a range of mosquito traps.

3. Stagnate water.

Mosquitoes like to breed in standing water. Therefore make sure you do not create the perfect conditions to draw them in. This could simply be a disused tire where water collects or even the pot your plants live in. Try and keep surfaces clear of water and ensure that there is adequate and working drainage for rainfall to flow from.

4. Natural remedies.

If you would prefer to keep mosquitoes away with natural remedies then there are a number of different options to try. Neem oil mixed with coconut oil is one. Alternatively try a combination of eucalyptus and lemon oil or camphor. All have qualities to ward off mosquitoes that you can use safely in your own home. 

5. Get planting. 

Mosquitoes tend to steer well clear of the strong aroma of garlic. They also aren’t a fan of lavender. Successfully grow these and you can enjoy the added benefits they bring. Likewise if you have the space grow shrubs of tulsi, mint or marigold which are all effective in keeping mosquitoes away.  

6. Citronella coils.

Citronella is another natural ingredient that keeps mosquitoes at bay and citronella coils are ideal for outdoor use. So if you are making the most of your outside area after dusk remember to light up a citronella coil.

7. Nets.

If you continually get bitten at night then why not fit a mosquito net over your bed. There are a lot of different styles on the market to suit your taste including sheer linens. Hang them around a four-poster bed for a real luxury feel.
